Article types
Surgical Atlas
The range of medical devices available for management of clinical problems in urology is extensive. BJUI.org has been expanded to include a Surgical Atlas section. This serves as a comprehensive resource for urologists and other clinicians. It comprises a series of detailed articles, each describing the nature of the device, how it is used, and the evidence supporting it. Any device will be considered for inclusion, across the field of urology andrelated specialties. Furthermore, it will be easy to link published Atlas items to subsequent updates and developments to convey the ongoing progress of the device. Extensive use of illustrations and video to support text is encouraged. Articles will be peer-reviewed.
Please use the following as general guidance for preparing items:
1. The senior author should be a clinician who has used the device in practice;
2. The introduction should be concise;
3. The bulk of the text should describe the procedures forusing the device in detail, supported by illustrations/video footage. Level of detail should be sufficient for full understanding of methodology for clinicians who have not previously used the technique.
4. Evidence of clinical efficacy and adverse effects should be given. Where no evidence has yet been obtained, this should be stated, along with a statement of intentions for collecting evidence or establishing a registry. Regulatory aspects, such as NICE guidance and CE marking should be listed.
5. Subsequent developments, particularly publication of clinical trial evidence can be forwarded to the BJUI website editorial team, and will be linked to the relevant Atlas item.
Surgical Atlas/Atlas of Urological Devices content can be submitted through http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/bjui-web
Commonwealth of Urology
There are many fascinating stories that could be told by those working in urology or allied professions; the “Commonwealth of Urology” section includes articles of general interest from anyone associated with the community of Urology in its widest sense. The sort of articles we anticipate receiving include reports on visits to urology centres, experiences raising charitable funding, descriptions of life working in any country, or experiences as a patient. There are no specific instructions on presentation style or article length. Narrative style is likely to work best(the standard introduction/methods/results/conclusions format would be unsuitable). We encourage inclusion of photographs and videos to emphasise the human interest. Articles will be reviewed by the editorial team. Commonwealthof Urology content can be submitted online via http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/bjui-web
Case Reports
Case reports describe individual situations or small series with a novel aspect or key message:unusual pathology, unexpected outcomes, a lesson learned. There are no specific instructions on article length. The style of the article requires an abstract/introduction/case report/discussion/conclusions/references. We encourage inclusion of photographs, pictures and videos to emphasise the interest. Articles will be peer-reviewed.
If you wish to propose a case report, please submit online using http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/bjui-web
Format
All manuscripts should start with a title page detailing: (1) the title of the article, (2) initials and names of each author,and (3) the name(s) of their institution(s). Correspondence during submission will be with the submitting author. All authors should be listed with their institutions on the title page of the manuscript. A correct email address for all authors is essential.
A covering letter should be included with the submission and should confirm that the paper has not been submitted elsewhere.
References
These should conform to the Vancouver style. The references in the text should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear and indicated by Arabic numerals in parentheses, e.g. [1]. If there are six or fewer authors, all should be listed. If there are more than six,then the first three should be listed followed by et al.
• References to unpublished work, including papers in preparation, should be kept to a minimum and should be mentioned in parentheses in the text as unpublished work, not in the reference list. The names of all contributors to the work should be given.
• Unpublished observations, personal communications and abstracts published only in proceedings of meetings should be quoted within the text of the manuscript, in parentheses. Information from manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted should be cited in the text as unpublished observations.
• References to online articles which require a live link to appear in the published material should always be accompanied by a direct link to this material in brackets.
Illustrations Where possible, please provide high quality digital artwork files (see http://authorservices.wiley.com/prep_illust.asp ) Magnification should be given with a scale bar or in the legend; magnification values in caption should be correct for enlargement/reduction of the illustration. Figures or tables reproduced from a published work must have the original source quoted and the permission of the author and publisher. We encourage submission of colour photographs in jpeg or tiff format. Authors wishing any submitted material (e.g. slides) to be returned should clearly identify as such.
